Our Approach to Dog Grooming In Auckland
Professional Grooming with Compassion
We’re qualified dog trainers and behaviourists as well as groomers, so we understand both the technical side of grooming and how dogs communicate stress, fear, and discomfort.
Every dog is groomed one-on-one in a calm environment. We work at your dog’s pace, using positive reinforcement and gentle handling that gives them as much choice as possible throughout the session.
Sessions include regular breaks and are adjusted based on how your dog is coping that day. Our priority is keeping your dog physically comfortable and emotionally safe, whether they love being groomed or simply tolerate it.
This Approach Works Well For:
- Puppies being introduced to grooming for the first time.
- Dogs who are anxious, noise-sensitive, or uncomfortable with handling.
- Dogs with a history of difficult experiences at groomers or vet clinics.
- Senior dogs or dogs with mobility issues who need extra support.
- Any dog who deserves a calm, behaviour-aware grooming experience in Auckland.
Anxiety & Fear-Free Dog Grooming Approach
Most grooming salons are designed for efficiency and high volume. We’ve built our business differently. As a qualified animal behaviourist, I’ve designed our Auckland grooming service around understanding what dogs communicate through their body language and behaviour.
Our team combines professional grooming skills with behavioural expertise. Our head groomer is also a qualified dog trainer, bringing that dual knowledge to every session. This means we recognise stress signals early and adjust our approach to keep dogs as comfortable as possible.
We watch for subtle communication, avoidance, whale eye, lip licking, or tension, that tells us a dog needs something different. If your dog needs a break, we stop and give them time. If they’re more comfortable in a different position, we adapt our handling to work with that.
What Sets Us Apart
This Approach Works When certain areas cause worry, we take extra time, offer enrichment like a lick mat, or modify our technique. For dogs who need more support, we can create a home preparation plan to help build positive associations with grooming at home.
This approach uses applied animal behaviour science to reduce stress and build cooperation. Many of our clients tell us their dogs settle more quickly over time and are calmer at home afterward compared to previous grooming experiences.
We’re not just groomers who love dogs, we’re trained professionals with backgrounds in canine behaviour, following Fear Free certification standards. This combination of grooming skill and behavioural expertise means we can create a genuinely low-stress experience, not just a quick groom.

Our Auckland dog grooming services are one-on-one and run at your dog’s pace. We take breaks when needed, use enrichment to create positive associations, and never force a dog through a groom if they’re showing significant distress.
If your dog has struggled with grooming in the past, learn about our fear-free approach and why it works for even the most anxious dogs.

Puppy Grooming in Auckland
Puppy’s First Groom
$85 (ex GST)
Your puppy’s first grooming experience sets the tone for the rest of their life. We take our time, use plenty of treats and play breaks, and introduce handling and grooming tools at your puppy’s pace.
We follow strict disinfection protocols between every puppy appointment, using F10 veterinary-grade disinfectant to keep them safe while their immune systems are still developing.
What to expect
We keep it short, positive, and pressure-free. Your pup will get used to being on the table, gentle handling, the sound of clippers and dryers (from a distance at first), and maybe a light trim or bath depending on how they’re feeling.
The goal isn’t a perfect groom, it’s building confidence and trust so grooming becomes something they’re comfortable with as they grow.
Best for
Puppies aged 10 weeks and older (after their second vaccination). Ideally booked before 16 weeks to make the most of their critical socialisation window.
If your puppy finds handling tricky, our puppy training classes can help build their confidence.
Desensitisation Sessions
On-Going Exposure & Grooming Prep
$85 (ex GST) per session.
Low-stress sessions for dogs who aren’t ready for a full groom yet. We work at your dog’s pace to help them get comfortable with handling, grooming tools, and the grooming environment.
Best for
Puppies learning grooming for the first time, anxious or fearful dogs, dogs with a history of negative grooming experiences, or any dog who needs time to build confidence and trust before a full groom.
What we work on
Getting comfortable on the table, gentle handling and touch, introduction to brushes, clippers, and dryers (at a distance first), nail trims in small steps, and positive associations with the grooming space.
Sessions are tailored to your dog’s needs and might include play breaks, treats, and plenty of choice. The goal is progress, not perfection.
Struggling with a dog who hates grooming? You’re not alone, and we can help. Our behaviourist works with dogs (and their people) to make grooming less stressful and more manageable. Learn more about our behaviour consultations.

From $105 (ex GST)
Your dog gets our complete attention from start to finish, no rushing, no crating between steps, just focused care with breaks for play and decompression as needed.

Every full groom includes
Professional clipping or hand-scissoring to your preferred style (breed cut or custom), nail trimming and filing, paw trim, ear cleaning, and sanitary hygiene.

Appointments & Cancellations
- Please arrive on time. If you’re more than 15 minutes late, we may not be able to accommodate your dog, and a no-show fee will apply.
- Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Late cancellations or no-shows will be charged the full grooming cost.
- If you arrive early and your dog is still being groomed, we may need to pause the session to keep them calm and safe. The full grooming fee still applies.
Regular Grooming
Dogs groomed every 8 weeks or less receive complimentary nail and pad trims, plus face and bum touch-ups between full grooms. Touch-ups must be booked within 2 weeks of the original appointment.
Coat Condition & Maintenance
- Dogs that aren’t groomed regularly may require extra time and care, which can result in additional charges.
- Senior dogs with overgrown or matted coats may not be suitable candidates for grooming due to potential health and welfare concerns.
- We do not shave double-coated breeds (such as Golden Retrievers, Pomeranians, or Australian Shepherds), as this can damage the coat and lead to long-term skin and hair follicle issues.
What’s Included
A full groom includes bath, blow-dry, brushing, light dematting (if needed), ear cleaning, nail trimming and filing.
Additional Costs May Apply For:
- Dogs requiring a second bath due to heavy soiling
- Extra time or support for anxious or sensitive dogs
- Extensive matting or coat neglect
Timing & Behaviour
We do our best to stick to scheduled appointment times, but some dogs need a slower, more supportive approach. If your dog has known anxiety, reactivity, or health concerns, please let us know in advance. If you have a time constraint, we’ll do our best to accommodate.
Before Your Appointment
Please make sure your dog has had a chance to toilet before arriving. This helps them feel more comfortable and keeps the grooming experience calm and hygienic.
Our Right to Refuse Service
We reserve the right to decline or pause grooming if we believe it’s not in your dog’s best interest, for safety or welfare reasons.
We provide fresh water, comfort breaks, and extra support for senior dogs throughout all grooming sessions. Regular grooming maintains healthy skin, reduces shedding, and we’ll always communicate any skin or health concerns we notice during the appointment. Our coat-specific expertise and seasonal adjustments makes sure your dog receives the most appropriate care for their individual needs and the time of year.
Grooming FAQ
Absolutely! Anxious dogs are our specialty. We use a gradual, behaviour-led approach that starts with building trust and comfort before any grooming begins.
Your dog sets the pace – we never force or rush them through the process. Many of our most nervous clients have become confident, relaxed dogs who actually enjoy their grooming sessions. We may recommend starting with our New Client Assessment to create as personalised plan for your dog’s specific fears or anxiety triggers.
Yes! Early positive experiences are crucial for lifelong grooming success. Our Puppy’s First Groom service is specifically designed as a gentle introduction to grooming tools, sounds, and handling. We use play, treats, and patience to create positive associations. For very young puppies, we start with our New Client Assessment to gauge their comfort level and may recommend shorter confidence-building sessions before their first full groom.
Unlike traditional grooming salons that focus purely on the technical aspects, our groomers are trained in canine behaviour and understand stress signals, body language, and fear responses.
We provide one-on-one attention (no other dogs present), use positive reinforcement techniques, and allow unlimited breaks. We also teach you home-care techniques to support your dog between visits. Our goal isn’t just a clean dog – it’s a confident, comfortable, and happy dog.
Yes — we have an open-door policy. You’re more than welcome to stay if you prefer.
It’s a common belief that dogs behave better without their guardian present, but there’s no evidence that this applies to all dogs. In fact, for some dogs, having a familiar person nearby can reduce stress and improve confidence, especially during early grooming experiences or when working through fear.
We’ll work with you to decide what’s best for your dog. Whether you choose to stay or step out, we’ll always focus on creating a calm, positive environment.
We don’t wait until a dog becomes overwhelmed. Instead, we use careful observation to spot early signs of discomfort — like increased tension, avoidance, or changes in body language — and adjust the session as needed.
Our goal is to prevent distress, not push through it. For dogs who are nervous or new to grooming, we build trust over time using gradual exposure, gentle handling, and positive reinforcement. This approach helps dogs feel safe and develop long-term comfort with grooming.
If your dog becomes too unsettled to continue, we stop or change the plan for that session.
Because each booking reserves time and staff to deliver a specialised, low-stress service, the full fee still applies — even if we don’t complete every step of the groom. You’re still receiving expert handling, behavioural support, and a tailored plan to help your dog progress safely and gradually.
Please let us know in advance. We’ll adapt the session for your dog’s comfort — this may include extra time, breaks, or handling changes. If your dog has known health risks, we may suggest a pre-visit consultation and may ask for veterinary clearance if needed.
Appointment times vary significantly based on your dog’s individual needs and comfort level. Our New Client Assessment takes 30 minutes, while full grooming can range from 60-90 minutes or longer if your dog needs frequent breaks. We never watch the clock – we work at your dog’s pace. Some anxious dogs may need multiple shorter sessions to build up to a full groom, and that’s perfectly fine. Quality and comfort always come before speed.
No. We do not use drying cabinets or tether dogs with grooming loops.
Drying is done by hand using a low-noise, dog-safe dryer — but only if your dog is comfortable with it. If they’re unsure or sensitive to airflow or sound, we’ll use towel drying instead.
We avoid unnecessary restraint and always follow a low-stress, consent-based approach. For dogs who find standing difficult — including seniors or those with joint or mobility issues — we adapt the setup and can groom them lying down on the floor.
Definitely! We believe grooming success extends beyond our salon. During your visits, we’ll teach you gentle techniques for brushing, nail handling, and other maintenance tasks that work specifically for your dog’s comfort level. We provide take-home tips and may demonstrate techniques that reduce stress and build your dog’s confidence with handling. This home support is especially important for anxious or sensitive dogs who benefit from consistent, positive experiences between professional appointments.
